Special Exhibition: "The Hanoverians on Britain's Throne 1714-1837"

After "The Hanoverians on Britain's Throne 1714-1837" at the Lower Saxon State Museum and "One Coach and Two Kingdoms: Hanover and Great Britain 1814-1837" at the Historical Museum, I finally managed to catch the third of five of this year's Lower Saxony-based special exhibitions headlined "When the Royals Came From Hanover" about the Hanover-British personal union. The exhibition also entitled "The Hanoverians on Britain's Throne 1714-1837" is currently taking place at the museum of Schloss Herrenhausen.

While the eastern wing of the museum displays the rising of the Guelph family on the basis of a number of paintings and other exhibits, the subterranean part focuses on the Baroque times in general. The Collection of Wallmoden - highlight and apparently the actual special exhibition - is located in the third show room of the museum. In addition to a large number of statues, which are usually on permanent loan to the Archaeological Institute of the University of Göttingen by the Guelph family, the exhibition features 50 paintings also originally owned by Count Johann Ludwig of Wallmoden-Gimborn, illegitimate son of King George II of Great Britain, and now spread all around the world.

Admittedly, I wasn't sure what to expect but nevertheless I expected the whole museum to be a little bigger. At least to someone with a bit (more) knowledge, there weren't an awful lot of things in the two first parts of the exhibition that were new to me. (Though I did wonder how it works that every right angle in the Garden is off by 2.8% yet rectangular and not noticeable.) The highlight is definetely the Wallmoden collection. If you are in any way interested in art, they are a must-see.

Good to know:

Schloss Herrenhausen and the Herrenhäuser Gärten are accessible via a combination ticket available for eight euros per adult. There also is a combi-ticket (16 euros for adults, 14 euros for students) available for all of the five exhibitions in Hanover and Celle though you will need to pay extra to visit the Gardens. The Großer Garten and Berggarten are open all year round. The museum is open every day during the summer season between 11am and 6pm. During the winter season (November 1-March 31), the museum is open Thursdays to Fridays between 11am and 4pm.
